The story behind the Asia Pacific Deaf Games began with "The 'Far Eastern Deaf Football Championship" was held in Taipei in 1983.
1983 Chinese Taipei - Humble Beginnings +
As a start, in 1983, Mr Chou obtained the support of the Taipei Grand Lions Club District 300-A in hosting the 1st Taipei Soccer Invitational Tournament (Far Eastern Football Championship).

The four participating countries were Chinese Taipei, Japan, Korea and Hong Kong, and there was a total of about 100 participants. The pioneering tournament marked the beginning of the growth of deaf sports awareness and developments in the Asia Pacific region.

1984 - 1st International Sporting Competition for the Deaf Hong Kong +
1984 saw the Mr Chou's efforts bearing fruit - the 1st International Sporting Completition for the Deaf - Soccer (1st Asia Pacific Deaf Games - Football) was held in Hong Kong from 18 to 22 December 1984. It was officiated by Mr John Lovett, CISS President.

The participating countries for this inaugural edition, organized by the Hong Kong Sports Association of the Deaf, were Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Indoesia, Korea, Kuwait, Malaysia and Chinese Taipei, Korea eventually emerged as the champions.

The tournament turned out to be the forerunner of the full-fledged Asia-wide Games, which was to come about years later.

1986 - 2nd Asia Pacific Deaf Soccer Championship Kyoto, Japan +
The 2nd Asia Pacific Deaf Football Championship (2nd Asia Pacific Deaf Games - Football) was held in Kyoto, Japan from 27 October to 1 November 1986. It was sponsored by the Japanese Athletic Association of the Deaf, and organized by the Kyoto Prefectural Association of the Deaf.

The five participating countries were Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and Malaysia. Korea repeated their feat and was once again the championships for this second edition.

1988 - 3rd Asia Pacific Deaf Soccer Championship Melbourne, Australia +
Continuing the biannual tradition, the 3rd Asia Pacific Deaf Soccer Championships (3rd Asia Pacific Deaf Games - football) was held in Melbourne, Australia from 26 March to 3 April 1988.

Hosted by the Australia Association of the Deaf and Australia Deaf Sports Federation, the five participating countries were Australia, Japan, Korea, Kuwait and Malaysia. The championship was won by Kuwait.
